Comic Ebooks

Post by tkcartoonist on Tue 17 Apr - 22:11

Because of the cost of sending out physical copies of comic books to various retailers is more than what the comics cost to print, I've thought about making them into digital ebooks to try to promote when I'm out and about. However, I know next to nothing about the market. There are several different ereader platforms out there, including some for comic books, but there is very little information floating around about formatting comics, how to submit comics, etc. What little I have found out so far is:

-Kindle Direct Publishing, Amazon's service for publishing Kindle books, is absolutely terrible for publishing comics because it creates terrible artifacts within the images, which no one would ever want to buy. I certainly wouldn't.

-Comixology is another platform I've looked into, but nothing on their website suggests how to submit comics to them, or even how their format works.

Can anyone help me out there? Has anyone had any luck with the ebook option of selling comics? What are the best platforms to go with?

Well, I finally put two issues of my comic up on B&N:

Drannik & Lizzep #1
Drannik & Lizzep #2

I'm hoping to put them up on other formats soon, as well as make a third issue, of course. Thanks for all the tips and tricks.

The second issue is better than the first one, to be honest. And when I get around to making the third issue, it'll be better than the second one. That's my big goal with this series.

How to make an ebook.

Post by Simon Lake on Mon 1 Oct - 2:02

You cant do a well made ebook with a "program". You need Indesign (OK its a program) but you also need to go in after and style with code as well as make proper versions for the different sellers and also you need a partial book for an iBooks sample book. Which I have yet to do but I will get to it. It's CSS and HTML and typography and book design all in one. Oh and cartoons. There's no automatic program that could ever do that. Well there's iAuthor but that point's moot.

PDFs are the antiques of ebooks. Epub is now the recognized standard file format. You have to make a mobi file with several specific requirements in the code that Amazon lays out in their epub specs. They require an in-line table of contents but I see plenty of books with no toc at all.

It's also good to have a text editor like BBedit for cracking open epub files to work on. Dreamweaver can work but you have to know how to open and then rezip up an epub file the right way. Not hard on a pc but a little trickier on the mac. Bedit will open an archive without unzipping which is handy. Make your edits and then close it up. I work on an ebook almost as much after it comes out the other end of Indesign as in it.

~ Extract from a conversation with a geek. No

Now I suppose I could do all that if I really had to but I'm not altogether sold.
