Too much pixelation is seen in my comics

Post by smalltowntom on Sun 20 May - 22:27

Hi,

My comics don't look good enough due to pixelation.

You can see the difference in my Small Town Tom comic, vs the professional comics here:
http://www.newspaper-info.com/comics/cartoon.htm
Sad

I have tried JPG, GIF, and TIFF formats....and even uncompressed files (that take too long to load)....they all come out looking the same.
Shocked

I use GIMP as my art software.
What a Face

Any help/tips would be appreciated.
Question

Thanks,
Mike

First of all, (gulp) hat's off for having the gumption to go against such big guns. All I can really suggest is that you either try to vectorise them which is entirely possible in Gimp or change your scanner settings. I use Photoshop but if that were me, I'd also maybe try altering the brightness/contrast or tweaking it somehow with the other settings.

Tough call. You could consider uninstalling Gimp and installing it again as you may have inadvertently upset the default settings. Failing that, try a different platform such as http://inkscape.org/download/ and see if there is any difference. At the end of the day, my gut feeling is that the problem rests with your scanner. Try uninstalling that and reinstalling it or sadly, it may just be on the blink and get a new one? Sad

If you know someone with a scanner, try scanning a strip in with theirs and see if this is so.

This is why this is my favorite forum....every time that I ask for help, the response is so encouraging. cheers Please don't ever lose that!

Thanks to your reply, I did figure out a workaround to my problem.
Very Happy

My problem was that my original was so big, that the compression programs to make it fit on web pages was "pixelizing" my curves.
scratch

My workaround was to display the picture to a more reasonable size (in my case 33%) in GIMP....do a screen capture....paste in paint and save. The resulting JPG displays just fine on any web site, without any pixelation at all! And as a bonus, the resulting JPG is tons smaller, too (about 7 times smaller), so it even loads faster.
sunny

Thank you so much for your reply, as I would never have guessed that.

And also what I've just realized now is that you should change image size to 72 dpi as opposed to 300.

Hi Mike!
Awesome, I know this one Smile. I went through much of the same trouble.
You should be able to do everything in GIMP. I made up a rough resizing tutorial here. http://drawingforward.com/img/tut/image_scaling-removing_pixelation.png
But a better method is to use the "save for web" plug-in. This is a standard feature in photoshop and it makes everything a lot easier.
You can get the plug-in here... http://registry.gimp.org/node/33
Installation instructions are in the readme file Smile.
Let me know if this works out.

Hi Mike,

pix·e·lat·ed also pix·i·lat·ed /ˈpɪksəˌleɪtəd/ adjective

of an image on a computer or television screen : made up of a small number of large pixels that produce a picture which is not clear or sharp.
From Merriam-Webster's Learner's Dictionary.

I had a similar problem, if you can get a hold of a copy of photoshop essentials or inkscape. Then your going to have to do a lot of research on you tube. It really helped me, You'll need a notepad and pen and go over as many tutorials as necessary, when you find one that works for you go over it again and again. Using your notepad write down the step by step formula. Try it with a simple sketch for practice, and don't be afraid to make a mistake.
Word of advice; if you can get the software for free take advantage of it,hope this helps.

Ron

Google vector magic it's the bomb!

Meanwhile I avoid this problem now by drawing images via iPad. I draw a larger image than desired then downsize it before I save it. Tis ensures a better quality image than if you draw it small then upsize it.

I was using an Adonit pro jot pen but now I just use my finger to draw. Also I use application art studio which is a vector drawing app for iPad. It's brilliant.
