How to make up a joke?

Post by Andries on Sat 9 Jun - 9:35

When I am given a subject for a cartoon (Say, traffic or bootcamps) I need a lot of brainstorming to get a lame joke. Does anyone here have a succesful system of making up new gags? I could really use such one because I plan to make quite some cartoons in the holidays.

If so, please demonstrate on the next few random subjects.
Mail (regular, not email)
Buying a house
Yucca's

Mail:
Dog barking at Postman
Indians sending smoke signals
Snail
Parallels between normal and email?
Word association http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mail

Buying a house:
Rising damp
House on a slope
House with a view/ telescope can see beach
Tortoises looking at shells
Word association http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estate_agent

Yucca's:
Talking to plant
Playing them music
Giant overgrown plant/ too much water
spikes/ hedgehog talking to a yucca
Word associationhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yucca

I dunno.....Google the subject to get triggers/ puns. It's all about wordplay really. Hope this helps.

I didn't know you had a whole topic on the subject already! Going to read it now.

I try to imagine the topic in it's normal form, and then stick something ridiculous into the scene, or try to make the scene silly.

Mail - weird mailboxes, elaborately decorated mailbox, someone getting wrapped up in stamps, trying to push a large item into a small mailbox or a small package...

Buying a house - eskimos checking out an igloo that's for sale, cavemen inspecting the cave drawings, intimidated-looking man applying for a loan at the huge bank, couple with dog looking at a beautiful house telling realtor that the dog has to approve of it before they buy (dog lifting leg in various places) (I might have to do that one!)

Yuccas - little boys playing knight-and-dragon using a leaf as a sword, elderly lady looking down her nose at the plant saying "I can see why they call it YUCK-a."...

When having a hard time coming up with a joke, I find it best to just start sketching. Lots of sketching. Try to let your mind go and let your hand and pencil do the work. A little sketch or doodle of something random can lead to light bulb going off in the brain and lead to something good and funny.
