How to create a poster from a small cartoon -print perfect

Post by LeahG on Tue 10 Aug - 14:05

How do you ensure a cartoon drawn on A4 paper scanned at 200dpi (which can be converted) will print out nice and clear for an A1 sized poster?

Are there any special considerations, or is this a straightforward dpi matter?

By A1, do mean like 4 times bigger than A4? I'm not too good at this coming from Zimbabwe. http://www.digital-display-printing.co.uk/Poster_sizes.html Why 200 dpi and not 300? That is unusual. I'd be interested to hear the answer to your post Leah if anyone else could shed some light. Quality is indefinitely going to be lost in this process no matter which way you look at it and it's really a bit of an ask as far as I reckon unless it is a vector image. Is this for a job?

Hi Simon, yes it's for a job and yes A1 is massive!! But fortunately they want a fairly simple toon so I will probably be able to vectorise it. I've had a couple of pointers from a pal.

It depends how long the client can wait for the cartoon. If they'll hold till after the weekend (this shouldn't be a problem) then I should be able to do it with my pals help.

The good thing about these challenges that come in is that it is forcing me to learn more techniques. My pal used to design logos, was a sign maker and is very skilled in photoshop and illustrator so he's gonna show me all the ropes. I am hoping to have some really geat dynamic samples for display soon when I've learned the how to's!!

It will make a big difference.

I need to spend today freeing up some memory on my pc, and thinking long term about upgrading pc to a Mac.

That's great news. You will benefit a lot from a face to face explanation of things like that rather than online. Does this mean you are finally going to take that all- important plunge into Photoshop? As you will have gathered by now, this has become the Industry norm along with Illustrator. I can still arrange something for you in this regard if you like, but why don't you give the free trail a go while you are doing this job? http://www.adobe.com/downloads/
Not too sure about the Mac upgrade. There's nothing it can do wot a PC can't these days but they sure look pretty.

I forwarded an image which is 300dpi which I am assuming will be ok for the size he wants it, the image itself won't be A1, the poster it is on will be, so hopefully they can get a decent print with the image at 300dpi.

The plan was for me to turn the image into a vector pic which I haven't been able to do yet (kids kind of thwarted my training plans) and have a new project from them, so that vectorization experiment has been put on the backburner for now.

But it is very much still on the agenda to master it.
