Blogging your doodles

Post by Kathy on Tue 17 Aug - 16:32

I love to see into the sketchbooks of others, but I've never posted any of my sketches or doodles to my own blog because I'm reluctant to put anything except my very best out into the public eye. At the same time, I tend to doodle at work and people here get a laugh from my drawings, which makes me want to share them even though they aren't anything completed.

So I wonder what your opinions are on letting the world see your scribbles 'n doodles. Do you think it could be damaging to your image? I think it would be fun and somewhat entertaining for others, which is why I'm interested in doing it, but Im not sure it's a good idea.

I think it is a great idea and certainly helps people who are new to cartooning see that it is not as smooth a process as people imagine with one pic being perfect first time.

You don't think it could reflect poorly on my work, to show the funny little scribbles? Not that I think so very highly of my work now, but I hope to improve!

Not at all. Sometimes the doodles are better! In my case anyway.

I do a pencil sketch sometimes that is full of character and the process of having to create solid thick lines for digital shading and what not, means I lose some of that fluidity and character. So the doodles themselves can be quite nice. In a scribbly kind of way. Consider how Roald Dahl's illsutrator Quentin Blake drew. Lovely scribbly sketches.

I just visited his website-love his work! Maybe I will look at sharing my little drawings, especially the ones I do at work. They seem to be the silliest Laughing Now I want to go home and get on the computer to start a new blog. (I love when a new idea grabs me, it's energizing!)

There is no shame in showing rough sketches, Eileen....I do it on other sites, and people seem to be able to read the strips I am doing.

It's a great quick way to test out ideas to see if they are worthwhile moving onto the more time-consuming finished stage.

Here's a couple of rough strips I done last week;

I'm thinking of adding roughs onto my own thread here.

Put some of your own roughs on here [HB pencils show up best of course] as we'd love to see them.

I often say that rough sketches are the most important stage of cartooning. If you put roughs on here for feedback, Eileen, we can help you choose your ideas with most potential.

So last night I quickly set up a free blog. I want to make my own background and such, but here is a start... www.kathysdoodleblog.blogspot.com

I made two posts, just so you guys would have something to look at LOL!

The idea isn't so much asking advice on new gags I might want to develop as it is simply putting things out there that made me smile. Some of my doodles that I make ar work are funny, at least I think so, and I like to entertain.

That's a really tidy blog Smile Love the illustration done with crayons, very effective use of a simple medium.

...tidy is good, right? Uncluttered? Clean? I hope to clutter it up with more posts soon, have to scan and clean up some of the bits of paper I've scribbled on.

I think it's a great idea. That will bring out the true Artist in you Eileen. Not altogether dissimilar to something our very own Crazy Idea Factory has going on. http://crazyideafactory.com/ And on and on.....(Lol)

I just checked out the crazy idea factory and I love it! I have a couple fragrance suggestions for the stinky alarm clock...dog farts, for one. Sometimes they can peel the paint off walls.

(thanks for following me-you're the first. Now I have to post stuff!)

I'd prefer to use thinners or turps but okay.
