Life on the road....

Post by RussCartoons on Tue 9 Nov - 9:33

Hello !
Sorry- it's been a while since I last posted !
Busy busy....

I've been on the road doing a tour of (what feels like) most of Britain for a major venue company....it's been absolutely brilliant !

My poor old VW Golf is the only casualty....it sadly died last week.
Sacrificed on the Altar of Caricature, it bravely travelled from Glasgow, Bournemoth, Liverpool, London and Reading and more places besides, frequently being hammered on the motorways by a frantically late cartoonist with no regard for machinery and less regard for national speed limits.
Rest in peace, George.

Last gig was at the O2 arena in London ( the old millenium dome ) and frankly, I really don't understand how Londoners do it.....travelling through that traffic was absolute murder !!
But a big thankyou to Duane the traffic warden...his sage-like directions to the arena were a timely act of sheer genius !

The work itself was fun, but technically quite difficult....
The idea was to draw a caricature on the back of branded card ( about 2' by 3' ) which was to be slotted into a lanyard and worn about the neck of the 'victim'.....
Small work and incredibly arm-tiring while walking queues of people and then being deafened by loud music in the party areas indoors.....thank goodness for aspirin !
My little clip-on aerial-like spot lights were a blessing too, and certainly gave my mini-drawing board a cutting edge space-age look.....;-)

The worst bit ?
Food.
Travelling for most of the day, you inevitably stop at a motorway service station for a break...and you inevitably feel hungry...and you inevitably end up sampling the delights of a Burger King or McDonalds.....I swear they put amnesiacs in with the cheese 'cos I never seem to learn how awful they are...

And as the burger settles like a rock in your stomach and you feel your internal organs atrophy and your skin breaks out in spontaneous middle-age acne, you end up wishing you'd opted for the dodgy looking ham and tomato sandwich from the gloriously overpriced shop instead.

Once I returned home, I promised myself a healthy salad.
But the link on my browser for the "Goldfinch" online chinese takeaway kinda called out to me....

Hi Russ

Sounds like you've had quite an interesting time despite the discomfort, some cartoon gag material in it perhaps?

Good to hear from you!

Thanks Leah !

And I'm sure I can come up with some cartoon gags once I finish the psychotherapy and stop dreaming of motorways.
I've already made progress.
I've stopped dreaming of armies of burgers marching past to the tune of The Sorcerers Apprentice....

;-)

Wow! Thank you for the behind-the-scenes look at a traveling caricature artist Very Happy Much more interesting, and probably much more fun, than my day job! Very cool!

I'm sorry to hear about poor George RIP. Sleep Where did you get the clip-on aerial-like spot lights?

Hi Simon,
Got them on eBay ( of course ! )
Here's the link to the ones I've got:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DUAL-TWIN-2-CLIP-LED-BOOK-READING-LIGHT-BED-LAMP-NEW-/230520303986?pt=UK_HomeGarden_Lighting_Lamps_Lighting_SM&hash=item35ac14b172

They're very small and light ( pun intended, just not very funny ) and are suprisingly powerful.
